Birds of Costa Rica
With Noel and Luis, a friend of Noels, I had the opportunity to join in four surveys for the Dept of Conservation. They were wonderful experiences indeed. The link to Noels Tropical Feathers Birding website is at the top of this page.
Enjoy.
Silvery-fronted Tapaculo at Tapanti National park. I will admit right here that I had never known of this bird until my friends Noel and Luis heard it in the underbrush near the station. They were both very excited and dropped everything to get the little bugger to reveal itself. These birds do not like to show themselves and are very secretive.
A two second appearance deep in some dark underbrush was enough to get two decent shots, this was the better of the two.
This is one of the more enjoyable problems with traveling around with two very experienced Costa Rican birders. They don't get all that excited about the glossy, gaudy more common species. Birds like the Golden-hooded Tanagers, birds by North American standards that are dressed to kill so to speak. They will get excited about dull little guys like the Tapaculo. Birds the local birders know are special but you never hear about in the travel brochures.
